Busan Port Authority will be developing a smart logistics system based on unmanned automation using blockchain technology.

On July 6, Busan Port Authority announced that it was finally selected as the agency to perform developing “Intelligent Unmanned Automation Smart Logistics System” proposed by the “Science and Technology Project Opening up the future of regions in 2020”.

The project, ‘The Science and Technology Project opening up the future of regions’ will be sponsored by The Ministry of Science & ICT and Busan Metropolitan City; and evaluated and managed by the Innopolis and Busan Innovation Institute of Industry, Science & Technology Planning(BISTEP). Considering socio-economic and industrial characteristics of the region, it will develop core technologies that can impact on future industrial development.

This project will be organized and promoted by total of nine related organizations and specialized companies. Busan Port Authority will be in charge of the overall organization. Korea Maritime & Ocean University and Busan Technopark will participate as cooperative research institutions. The logistics, automation and IT specialists in Busan, Totalsoft Bank and Kuls, and Adas One, a self-driving company, will also participate in the consortium.

The estimated project period will be 5 years in total (3 years of basic and source technology development and 2 years of R&D for commercialization). The project is funded 11.4 billion won, including 5.7 billion won in national expenses and 5.7 billion won in municipal expenses. The project will develop ▲ Localization and application technology of smart sensors for safety and automation in ports, ▲ Smart technology of facilities and equipment in an intelligent IoT (Internet of Things) based logistics center, ▲ Blockchain/LPWA (Low Power Wide Area Network) based smart cargo integrated control service platform technology, and etc.

The project will include developing spatial scope of the technology for both the import and export logistics systems and routes, such as the port space and the distribution center in the port hinterland. Busan Port Authority said, “It is expected to secure a platform that can comprehensively monitor and manage the information status of ships and cargoes in and out, as well as facilities and equipment operated by ports and logistics centers in the future.”
