[블록미디어 지승환 인턴기자] 미국 경제학자이자 금본위주의자인 피터 시프(Peter Schiff)가 미국의 경제 정책을 강하게 비판하며, 미국 달러 가치의 붕괴가 임박했다고 경고했다.
8일 현지 언론에 따르면 시프는 최근 자신의 X(옛 트위터)에서 “달러 가치는 수직낙하할 것이고 금 가격은 치솟을 것”이라며 “미국의 막대한 무역 불균형을 해소할 유일한 방법은 달러의 기축통화 지위를 종료시키는 것뿐”이라고 주장했다.

그는 제롬 파월 연방준비제도(Fed·연준) 의장에 대해서도 비판을 덧붙였다. 연준은 7일 경제 불확실성을 이유로 기준 금리를 4.25~4.5%로 동결하겠다고 밝힌 바 있다. 이어 “파월 발언의 속 뜻을 읽어보면 경제는 약화되고 있지만, 인플레이션이 강해지고 있어 금리를 낮출 수도, 올릴 수도 없는 딜레마에 빠져 있다는 것을 알 수 있다”고 말했다.

경제 불확실성 해소를 위해 관세를 일시적으로 인하하는 방안에 대해서도 부정적인 의견을 냈다. 투자자 빌 애크먼(Bill Ackman)이 대중국 관세를 20%까지 인하한 후, 점진적으로 관세를 인상하는 방안을 제안하자, 시프는 이를 효과 없는 대책이라며 일축했다. 그는 “중국은 미국과 거리를 두기로 결정했다”고 밝히며 중국과의 협상 가능성에 대해 부정적으로 내다봤다.
